Cyber Terrorists

Nowadays, everybody uses the computer for different purposes. Some of people keep important information in computer databases.  For example, the banks keep very important information stored in a huge database with all their clients’ personal information like social security numbers, addresses, credit card numbers, and names. Hackers hack on personal computers to extract important information and steal credit card numbers to commit frauds, but Cyber terrorists are worst than hackers because they delete or extract government information such as criminal records and police information, they also send important information to their associates world wide to keep them informed or to inform themselves about information that the other cyber terrorists had stolen. Cyber terrorists can really harm national security because most or all the information that the government has about us is stored in a huge database and it is that database is the target of all the cyber terrorists in the world because by gaining access to the United State database the U. S. will be vulnerable against the cyber terrorists. Cyber terrorists communicate via internet, that way mostly all of the law enforcement agencies are not able to trace them and that is how they get away.  

Data Mining

I think that data mining is very important in all aspects. After the terrorists attacks of 9-11 racial profiling was an issue in airports and in different stores that sell material to build explosives. I know that racial profiling is different than data mining but it all go to the same conclusion. What I am trying to say is that not all the people that buy guns are serial killers but, by mining data law enforcement agencies would know who exactly bought certain products or visit certain web sites that a normal person would not visit on a regular basis. I would not visit a “how to build a bomb with 10 dollars” web page with no intend to build one. That is how law enforcement agencies can catch terrorists. I think that because I do not have anything to hide I do not have anything to fear because I don’t care if the FBI checks my statements they are not going to find anything but, if they dig into some other person life they would probably find something. I do not think that data mining is racial but, sometimes if you stereotype you will probably what you are looking for.

I think that the internet filtering in China it is good for the Chinese citizens, but at the same time it is bad. I think that it is good because young kids are not going to have access to porn sites and other sites that can be harmful to their behavior later on, by censoring this type of information the government is making the citizens to live with out the bad things of the internet and taking the good things like researching for school projects or other stuff, like the ones that are really interesting and important. The bad thing about this is that the government is enslaving the people because the people would not feel comfortable knowing that somebody is watching their back regardless if they are criminals or not, because they would not want to write a love letter to his or her girlfriend or boyfriend because they know that somebody would be probably laughing about the letter. I think it is bad because people from china are not informed about what is happening in other parts of the world or happened in other parts of the world like the Taiwanese and Tibetan independence. I think that the people that would have to take care of uncensored sites are the parents of the children and give them a good education.    

INternet in Sierra Leone

I think that it is very good that now citizens from Sierra Leone are going to have full access to the World Wide Web. I think that with these advances and technology that Sierra Leone citizens are getting, they are going to be able to enhance their knowledge by surfing the web more efficiently and with out many delays, people from Sierra Leone will be informed from every issue that is happening in all over the world. With this new improvement, citizens from Sierra Leone will be more prepared and will have more opportunities. With this I am not saying that they will have the same opportunities like us, but it is a good start. Because Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in sub-Saharan Africa people from there have not seen a lot of benefits coming from the internet because what they really need is food, shelter and other basic needs instead the internet, but with the internet they are going to have access to libraries all around the world, and they will have access to information that will allow them to keep in touch with scientist, colleges, and professional association. With the internet access people from Sierra Leone are going to be able to offer their products all around the world and that way they will their economy will improve.   

Viral Videos and Viral Politics

Viral Marketing and Viral Politics are a very interesting when they are mix together. Viral marketing is a form of advertising

that unconsciously people spread to other persons and with out knowing that in the mail that they have just sent to their friends,

girlfriend or brothers, is hidden a powerful message that not even you can detect, viral marketing is a form of advertising a

product or a person, you can even say something about a person that nobody knows but if you start sending messages to your

friends and tell them to send the message to their friends and to the friends of their friends it will be like a virus (viral

marketing). Politicians use viral marketing to change voter’s reactions or change their point of view in a particular

action.            

            Today, political advertising has been playing a very important role in the United States. There are a lot of advantages

and disadvantages for politicians. Through the pass of the year’s politicians have been changing the way to communicate with

their voters, politicians used to greet voters at the entrance of the stores or at the intersections of a busy town, giving

speeches in a hall or a parking lot. Campaigns have become more expensive through the pass of the years because now

what the politicians are using are the so called “advertising agencies” and “consultants” that are introducing more market

research and market strategies. These agencies invest a lot of money on research on each city, state and country. These

agencies are almost 100 percent sure who is voting for the republican candidate and who is voting for the republican

candidate.   

            Now there are different ways to communicate with the voters, one of these ways is via Internet. Many internet

users spend a lot of time surfing the web because either is their tool of work, they are students and need the internet or

because they just like to have fun playing video games on the internet, watching videos on youtube.com or downloading music

on the web. Today almost every person in the United States has a computer and an E-mail account, therefore one of the

strategies that the advertising agencies are using to spread messages through the internet is via E-mails. E-mails is one of

the best ideas that the advertising companies have ever came up with because that thing have had happened to me before.

When I open my e-mail account and start checking the people that have sent me E-mails I obviously recognize the people that

I don’t know and I check the subject of the message.

                 If I see something important or something interesting like politics, discounts something funny I would open them, but

whenever I open the messages I see advertisements from different stores  like Macys, Sears, Dillard’s, Prada, DKNY, and

many more of these that supposedly they can give you a Prada purse or a pair of DKNY sunglasses for free, but to get this

product it is required to type your E-mail address in a little box. That is how

the advertising agencies get your E-mail and they start sending you all the information that the politicians want you to read.

Sometimes they need to send you the information because otherwise you will not read it elsewhere.             

             There are different reasons why viral marketing is used in politics; one of them is to send a message to people with

out

spending any campaign

money, because they have more expenses to make for example viral videos, or in the investigations that they do to get

information about the politicians that they are competing with. Politicians can appear on television and speak to the audience

telling them to send and E-mail to his or her E-mail account just to vote for something insignificant and then they will have your

E-mail. 

 Researcher examine campaign advertising and their effects on the public, scholars say that political advertising can

provide good benefits revealing important issues and information not available in the normal sources. One of the first studies

has shown that the assertion has not been consistent, but other studies have shown that citizens learn a lot of information

about their candidates and their positions just by viewing the TV commercials (Ridout 202).According to Travis Ridout there

are two broad categories for the past attempts to measure exposure to televised political advertising, and these are those

who rely upon people’s recall and those that attempt to measure the volume of messages sent. There is one company in the

United States called “CMAG” that takes in and code the advertisement data collected by using satellite tracking system and

collects the larger set of broadcast data. This company has the largest amount of political advertisement ever compiled.

CMAG has “ad detectors” in all of the 100 media markets in the U.S. with this software CMAG can identify each of the

advertisements and recognize if it is a political advertisement or not (Ridout 203).  

 In their research Travis N. Ridout, Dhavan V.

Shah, Kenneth M. Goldstein,and Michael M. Franzhas came up with six types of measurements of advertising exposure. The first

one is how many hours a day the respondents watch tv, the second one is the total of presidential spots aired in the

respondents media market sponsored by the candidates, other parties and interest groups, the third one is the hours of

television viewing times the total of political ads, the forth one is the measure of the different types of programs that the

respondents watch like local news programs, game shows, morning new programs, and day times talk shows, the fifth one is

the measure of the time that the respondents watch television for example (6-8 a.m.), (8-9 a.m.), (9-noon), (12-1 p.m.) (1-3

p.m.), (3-5 p.m.), (5- 6 p.m.), (6-7 p.m.), and from (7-10 p.m.), the sixth one is the Genre-based Measure that is depending on

how often the respondent watched television.  These results led the researchers to the conclusion that the political

advertisements have a favorable effect on the viewers and that the advertisements give relevant information about campaign

issues.           

According to Patrick Devlin the prices of the political campaigns have inflated with time, in his research Patrick

Devlin stated that Ronald Reagan spent more than 60 percent of federal funds on television advertisements, approximately

Regan spent 13 million dollars on television advertisements.Devlin says that one of the advantages of political advertising is

that they can be controlled by them; Patrick Devlin states that “Candidates may not be able to control what the opposition says

or does, or control what the media televises or print. But candidates, if they are properly financed, can control the message

and the image conveyed through paid television advertising” (45). Other advantage of political advertising is that the

advertisements can bring a relatively unknown candidate into the mainstream spotlight. Devlin says that it is less common that

candidates use that strategy in presidential campaigns than in gubernatorial or senatorial campaigns (45). As mentioned

before, advertisements can also be used to attack the opponent, Devlin stated in his research that in Regan’s 1980’s pollster

Vincent Breglio, maintained, “It has become vital in campaigns today that you not only present all of the reasons why people

ought to vote for you but you also have an obligation to present the reasons why they should not vote for the opponent” (46).

In the video “we are the ones song by will.i.am – Obama, advertisement agencies tried to make the video so relaxing that it

really make you feel and think about the message that they are trying to send you. The first time that I listened to the video, I

was thinking in what the actors were saying and I really felt compelled to vote, I felt that we had to support him for the greater

good of the country and our children or future children. On the video “hot4hill” that was supposed to be in response to the “I

have a crush on Obama” video, but I think both of the videos was a waste of money because I think that political campaigns

have to be serious and not like those videos that I really disapprove. I think that the Obama’s video “we are the ones” is the

video that really drew my attention and really made me think about the problems all around the world and the “I have a crush on

Obama” that one in the middle of the song she is singing the proposals that the president is trying to impose.

Viral Marketing and Viral Politics

TOPIC: Viral Marketing and Viral Politics    

I.- INTRODUCTION – This paper will explore the association between viral marketing, and politics by focusing on the E-mails sent by the marketing companies or the promotions on the internet.  

II.- BODY – Viral marketing as a technique used as a source of political campaigns, social networking, methods to modernize the capacity to maintain, and manipulate political campaigns.   

 A.- How do advertisement agencies get your information by sending campaign E-mails or by filling out an application on the internet.    

-how do viral marketing, or viral politics change the point of view of the voters, The strategies that made Obama’s and Hillary’s campaigns so popular because of the viral videos “Hott4Hill” by Taryn Southern in response to the video “I got a crush on Obama”. 

B.- instruct the readers what exactly viral videos are, how they achieve the Recognition expected by spreading the video through the internet, E-mail, IM messages, blogs or other form of websites. 

C.- analyze the videos, compare the most famous videos with the less popular Videos, the hidden political messages in the video.

    III. CONCLUSION -             

Viral Politics

Last week readings were very interesting, but the only one that entirely draw my attention was the reading about “viral politics” because it is an interesting form of advertising that Unconsciously people pass to another person without noticing its real intention that is to spread information or just to make something noticeable that politicians use to gain popularity of the voters.This strategy it is very good for all kinds of businesses, some people lie about something or make something up just to send an E-Mail to a friend and that friend will forward it to his or her friends and successively to everybody. Politicians use this type of advertising to make other politicians look bad or make themselves look a good person by saying something or by doing something and then they will appear on millions of E-Mails. This “marketing’s” are just to make them noticeable, it is just like if someone make something up about some one that it is not famous or half famous, and them because of that lie he or she becomes famous or interesting to the community. That is why I think viral politics is such an interesting subject to discuss or to write about.   

Public Sphere

Nowadays not everyone have access to the internet, but in the future most of the people will have access to it. Internet is a fundamental tool that everyone needs to be informed of what it is happening all around the world like news, culture, and information.
With the internet, people can get together and discuss problems that involve their community, state, religion, state, or country. I think that soon there will be a blog where any person will post their inquiries or their interest in certain issue. Habermas perceive as the future of democracy, he thinks that with this public sphere the state will be in check and that social inequalities will remain untouched because of the internet public sphere.
With this public spheres they will be able to persuade political action and gather with more people and start a movement against the government, but this is not a fighting arena where people will fight with the government, it is just simply a place on the internet where they would be able to post ideas, concerns, debate, and deliberate. That way society will be able to tell the government what they think and what they are expecting from them, and the government will listen and help them.

Internet Politics

The World Wide Web has always been the government’s principal weapon against countries, and people who protest, and create conflicts, but now this is one of the people principal weapon agaist their government. As far as I know I have sent lots of e-mails to my friends, forwards that have different meanings, for example, Saturday noon I went to the store and I saw a group of activists against the abortion and that reminded me that people that I have not met in my life sent me E-mails with pictures of abortions that I have never imagined in my life, and I forwarded back to all my contacts in my hotmail list so they can be aware about what people do to these inoffensive creatures. With the internet a lot of people from other countries are connected with people from the United States or vice versa, this way people can be aware of conflicts, wars, protest, murderers from around the world, and if they want to join the protest there are ways to join them or help them achieve their goals.

Now society is well informed with government’s public records, and information that citizens are interested in so people can see more clear where their money goes and what is their president doing to maintain a good wealth on their country

Benefits of the Internet

Since the U.S. Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) began with their internet project, scientists developed a protocol which was known as the TCP/IP after two protocols developed, the Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol.Since this project became a reality and with the scientists help, the world has integrated even more, and people can communicate faster and even better. With the birth of the internet, governmental agencies such CIA, FBI, U.S. ARMY, MARINES CORPS, etc. have had a lot of benefits utilizing the internet by sending important information to other countries or to the force itself. Normal citizens have had a lot of benefits too, now thanks to the scientists, students from all over the world can study better; get important information just by checking the internet or just by making a click on the web page and typing their inquiries.Thanks to the internet, the economy from all over the world has growth rapidly, people from all over the world can post an item on the internet, sell it, and make a profit out of it with just a little investment. The internet has brought to us many benefits, but also it has brought us a lot of bad things such as pornography, child pornography, and frauds such as banking frauds, Identity theft, and a lot of bad things, but is our decision just to take the good benefits that the internet offers to us.
